Welcome to Saint Paul Technical School (SPATS) Web Site
Mr .Benjamin Adjabeng

Welcome to St. Paul Technical School (SPATS).  The school is located in Kukurantumi – Akim under the Kibi Municipality (East Akim) in the Eastern Region of Ghana.  SPATS has a long standing reputation for being one of the best Technical Schools in the country with a serene and comfortable environment for academic work, caring staff and excellent welfare and support system for students.

St. Paul Technical School was established in the year 1957 by the Society of the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD) of the Catholic Church in Ghana.  It is indeed the first Technical School established in Ghana by the Catholic Church to train the youth to acquire Technical Skills to make them employable in the government as well as private sectors or better still make them self-employed.

The first Principal, Rev. Fr. John Harpel (SVD) started the school with eighteen (18) students under the shelter of a rented Cocoa Shed.  It was more of a Mission support school.  The only Course offered then was Blocklaying and Concreting and later incorporated with Carpentry and Joinery.  Rev. Fr. Harpel handed over the school to Rev. Fr. Josef Sprehe (SVD) in 1971.  In 1973, under the headship of Rev. Fr. Josef Sprehe (SVD), the Government absorbed SPATS into the public sector and it became a Government Assisted School.

Currently, the school runs the following programmes: Automobile Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Building Construction Technology, Wood Construction Technology, Architectural Drafting and Welding & Fabrication.  Alongside, each student takes the following Core Subjects:  English Language, Integrated Science, Social Studies, Information & Communication Technology with other related subjects namely Bible Knowledge and Entrepreneurship.

For effective teaching and learning, the school has spacious classrooms, well-equipped workshops for intensive practical lessons, Science and Computer Laboratories etc.  The beautiful landscape gives the school a very conducive environment for students to study even on their own.

Great SPATS, as famously known from its establishment, used to be male-dominated school.  However, in 2006/2007, the stakeholders decided to open the school’s doors to female students who were interested to venture into the traditional technical programmes.  The school therefore is currently a mixed school with boarding facilities for both male and female students. Students are also given the opportunity to study in the school as day students.

St. Paul Technical School can boast of quality technical education to its students.  Products of the school can be found in many fields of endeavor, including Engineering, Construction, Administration, Medicine, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Politics, Law, Private Entrepreneurship and Consultancy etc. in Ghana and abroad.

Dear students, the school offers a broad-based education.  If you would seize the opportunity, as the Motto of the School ‘CARPE DIEM’ means, coupled with discipline and hard work, the sky should be your limit.

St. Paul Technical Community wishes you a happy stay in Great SPATS.
